Why We Host Learning Conferences for Educators (And Why It Matters for Your Child)

In a field often viewed as "babysitting," we are fighting for professionalization. Learn why our semi-annual conferences are critical for your child's development.

There is a misconception that Early Childhood Education (ECE) is simply "watching kids." But the first five years of life are critical for brain development. To support that development, you need educators who are not just present, but inspired.

Professionalizing the Field

Burnout is real in our industry. When educators feel undervalued, they leave. At Bella Vita, we decided to change the narrative. In 2025, we launched our semi-annual Early Learning Conferences—a space for educators from across the Okanagan to gather, learn, and reignite their passion.

Spring 2025: The Environment as the Third Teacher

Our inaugural conference welcomed Dr. Kathryn Murray from Australia, an expert in space design. We dove deep into how the physical environment impacts a child’s nervous system.

We learned that lighting is not just functional; it's pedagogical. We explored how to create "communication friendly spaces" that reduce anxiety and encourage collaboration. This wasn't about decorating; it was about designing spaces that honor the neurological needs of developing brains.

Fall 2025: Sustainability & Inquiry

Our Fall conference shifted focus to Inquiry-Based Learning. Our own teams presented on their long-term projects, including a fascinating "Fashion Inquiry" and a "Soil Inquiry."

The "Fashion Inquiry" started with a simple interest in dress-up and evolved into 3-5 year olds learning to sew, measure, and construct garments. This is what happens when educators are trained to notice and extend a child's curiosity. A simple game becomes a lesson in engineering and math.

Why This Matters for Your Family

Why does it matter that your childcare provider attends a conference? Because you cannot pour from an empty cup.

When an educator is inspired, they bring that energy into the classroom. They see your child differently. They don't just see "behavior"; they see a theory the child is testing. They don't just see a "mess"; they see an inquiry into gravity or texture.

We are committed to making the Okanagan a hub for world-class early years pedagogy. Because when our team is learning, your child is thriving.
